YKKMP Install Humanitarian Billboard in Puncak, Urge Civil Protection in Papua Conflict

SINAK – Foundation of Justice and Integrity of Papua Humanity (YKKMP) together with the community of Sinak District conducted an action of installing humanitarian message billboards in Puncak Regency, Central Papua Province, on Monday, May 11, 2026. This step is a collective response of civil society towards the escalation of armed conflict that continues to hit the region.

The activity which started at 08.00 WIT was centered in the yard of the GKII Imanuel Sinak Church and led directly by the Director of YKKMP as well as Human Rights Defender, Theo Hesegem. The action was also accompanied by the Chairman of the Sinak Classis, Rev. Jas Murib, along with ranks of church figures, tribal chiefs, and students.

The installation of this billboard aims to emphasize the rights of civil society based on International Humanitarian Law.

In a dialogue with the Commander of Peace Operation Cartenz at the location, Theo Hesegem emphasized that this initiative is a channel for the aspirations of residents who demand protection from attacks without target distinction, prohibition of torture, and guarantees of personal safety in the midst of armed disputes.

There are three main demands voiced through the outdoor media. First, residents urge the TNI and TPNPB apparatus to not make civilian residential areas a battlefield. Second, the community demands the cessation of the practice of arbitrary arrests outside of legal procedures. Third, residents ask for guarantees so that public facilities such as schools, health centers, and houses of worship remain functioning without intimidation interference.

Chairman of the Sinak Classis, Rev. Jas Murib, stated that the message inscribed is a representation of the community's anxiety that has long been buried. He also appealed to all parties to keep the billboard intact as a symbol of protection for refugees from Kembru District, Pogoma District, Yugumuak District, and Oneri District who are now in Sinak.

"At the end of this billboard installation activity, I express my gratitude," said Rev. Jas Murib as an appreciation for the humanitarian assistance efforts in his area.

In addition to the church yard, similar billboards were installed at the Gulanikime Intersection and the West Sinak area. YKKMP scheduled a follow-up action on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, to ensure that messages of peace and civil protection are spread across other strategic points in Sinak District. ***
