TIMIKA - Central Headquarters Management of the National Liberation Army of West Papua National Command (KOMNAS TPNPB) stated that the attack against the Indonesian military on 17 August 2026 in Jila District, Mimika Regency, which resulted in an Indonesian TNI member dying and two others being injured, has no operation order from the local headquarters leadership.

​This official statement was issued to clarify a series of bloody incidents that occurred in that area. An official report from the Kali Kopi Timika Headquarters confirmed that the attack on the Indonesian military post by forces in the field on 17 August 2026 was carried out without an official operation or attack order from Brigadier General Anies Beanal.

​The gunfight on 17 August 2026 killed one Indonesian military member under the name Private First Class Riski Kurniawan from the National Vital Object Security Task Force (Satgas Pam Obvitnas) of PT Freeport Indonesia Infantry Battalion 133/YS, and injured two other soldiers. The fierce contact of weapons triggered a follow-up bloody action on the following day.

​TPNPB stated surprise over the follow-up event on 18 August 2026 in Pasir Putih Village, Jila District, where nine female civilians were taken hostage, a mother named Mama Neregingget Magai was shot dead, and another resident suffered broken bones due to falling into a ravine while trying to save herself. TPNPB until now does not know the parties involved in that criminal action.

​The incident of hostage-taking of nine women who were dominated by schoolgirls and teenagers in Jila District caused deep concern. TPNPB will conduct a thorough investigation and investigation into the hostage-taking and shooting case. TPNPB also acts firmly and will chase as well as prosecute the perpetrators of violence in Pasir Putih Village.

​"Central Headquarters Management of KOMNAS TPNPB has received an official report from TPNPB forces from Kali Kopi Timika Headquarters that the attack and shooting against Indonesian military officers in Jila District on 17 August 2026 which resulted in the death of an Indonesian military officer and two others injured has officially no operation and attack order by Brig. Gen. Anies Beanal," said TPNPB Spokesperson, Sebby Sambom, Monday (24/8/2026).

​TPNPB urged all independent Human Rights (HAM) institutions, both national and international, to take part in an independent investigation. This investigation is considered very important so that the veil over the event of civilian hostage-taking in Jila District can be revealed clearly.

​The political struggle of TPNPB is solely carried out to reclaim the independence of the West Papuan nation proclaimed on 1 December 1961 from the Indonesian colonialism government. All forms of violence against civilians outside of TPNPB's official political stance are ensured to not accord with the organization's line of struggle.

​An internal investigation will also be applied thoroughly to all TPNPB forces spread across the areas of Timika, Intan Jaya, Nduga, Puncak, Puncak Jaya, to Tembagapura. TPNPB emphasized that if it is proven there is involvement of its members in the civilian hostage-taking and abuse action, those concerned are ready to be tried according to applicable law by the TPNPB Military Council.
