JAYAPURA - The Department of Law and Human Rights of the Evangelical Church in Indonesia (GIDI) officially launched the GIDI Legal Aid Institute (LBH) in Jayapura, Papua Province, to provide legal protection, monitoring, and advocacy for small communities and vulnerable groups in Papua.
The launch of the advocacy institute was held on Monday (28/9/2026) as a form of the church's commitment to responding to various legal and humanitarian issues continuously faced by civil society.
The formation of LBH GIDI was motivated by the urgent need for the existence of an institute with specific capacity to handle various humanitarian crises in the field.
This institute is designed to carry out monitoring work, legal assistance, protection, documentation, and periodic reporting on issues experienced by church members and the wider community.
The presence of LBH GIDI is expected to become a service forum that consistently defends vulnerable community groups in obtaining justice.
The inauguration procession was conducted directly by the Central Executive Board (BPP) of GIDI, attended by the President and Vice President of GIDI through a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
In addition to inaugurating the institute, the leadership of BPP GIDI prayed for and installed the lawyers who will serve in the legal aid service.
"The lawyers are expected to carry out service duties professionally, with integrity, and uphold the principles of justice, humanity, respect for human rights, and the interests of communities needing legal assistance," said Rev. Jimmy Koirewoa, Monday (28/9/2026).
LBH GIDI will focus its services directly in crisis areas, such as regions affected by conflict, violence, and crises resulting from natural or social disasters.
Assistance also includes residents in displacement locations, communities facing alleged human rights violation cases, and various other social issues.
To optimize field operations, LBH GIDI will coordinate closely with the Department of Law and Human Rights of GIDI and the GIDI Humanitarian Team.
Strategic partnerships are also established with government agencies, community organizations, humanitarian organizations, and stakeholders concerned with the enforcement of justice.
Inter-agency synergy is considered very important so that people under legal pressure or in emergency humanitarian conditions can receive assistance quickly and accurately.
The Department of Law and Human Rights of GIDI invites all church members and the wider community to actively participate in providing real support for this legal service operation.
Public support is called a key element to strengthen the sustainability of advocacy and protection for believers in need of help.
The involvement of all parties who care about the enforcement of human rights in the land of Papua will strengthen the scope of LBH GIDI's service moving forward. (One Papua)
