MIMIKA - The West Papua National Liberation Army (Tentara Pembebasan Nasional Papua Barat - TPNPB) stated that it takes responsibility for the attack on the Indonesian military post in Jila District, Mimika Regency, which occurred on August 17, 2026 at around 08.00 local time. The incident resulted in one member of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (Tentara Nasional Indonesia - TNI) being killed, while two other personnel sustained injuries.

​Private (Pratu) Rizki Kurniawan died after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head in the incident. Meanwhile, two other TNI members who sustained injuries were Private Y Pasaribu and Private Kiki Febrio.

​Meanwhile, the series of attacks and armed clashes had implications for the cancellation of the Indonesian government's planned flag-raising ceremony at the Jila Koramil Post (Posramil Jila). In addition, the unconducive security situation triggered the displacement of civilians in the surrounding area.

​TPNPB asserted to President Prabowo Subianto regarding the incident being a manifestation of the Indonesian government's failure in resolving the root cause of the conflict in the land of Papua for the past 64 years. TPNPB also stated its readiness to carry out attacks on a larger scale if Indonesia does not immediately open negotiation space.

​TPNPB urged all immigrant residents as well as military intelligence agents disguised in various professions such as meatball vendors, construction workers, taxi drivers, motorcycle taxi drivers (ojek), to kiosk vendors to immediately leave the TPNPB operational area throughout the Land of Papua. The warning was conveyed as a response to the operation carried out by TPNPB in order to retake the independence of the Papuan nation since December 1, 1961.
