Three Civilians Killed and Hundreds Displaced Following Gunfight in Boven Digoel

PAPUA - Three civilians and one member of the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) were killed, and four Indonesian military personnel were shot in an armed clash in Boven Digoel that took place from July 19 to July 30, 2026.

The armed incident in the Korowai region forced hundreds of local gold miners to flee into the forests in the areas of Yahukimo Regency, Pegunungan Bintang, and Asmat to establish emergency displacement camps.

Operational Commander of TPNPB Defense Regional Command (Kodap) XVI Yahukimo, Major Kopitua Heluka, Thursday (30/7/2026) stated, "The drop attack by the Indonesian military using three military helicopter units carried out shooting and bombing attacks from the air targeting civilian settlements."

TPNPB asked President Prabowo Subianto, Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, and Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Agus Subyanto to stop all ground and air operations targeting civilian settlement areas.

TPNPB urged the United Nations (UN) and the UN Human Rights (HAM) Council to deploy an independent investigation team to the Land of Papua to monitor the security situation in the area.

TPNPB noted that this humanitarian crisis worsens the condition of internally displaced persons in the Land of Papua, which according to Human Rights Monitor data has reached more than 125,931 people.

TPNPB also urged the International Red Cross to directly step in to distribute logistics and medical assistance for vulnerable refugee categories such as children, pregnant women, and the elderly. (One Papua)
