KNPB Urges Independent Investigation Into Alleged Sexual Violence in Yahukimo

NUMBAY — The West Papua National Committee (KNPB) of Numbay Region, Asya Sector responds to the tension of the security situation in Yahukimo Regency, Papua, following reports of alleged sexual violence against a civilian.

Based on reports received, the alleged rape of a mother occurred in the Kali Biru area. The victim was threatened using a firearm before being raped by Indonesian military personnel serving in the region.

"We strongly condemn all forms of sexual violence and alleged human rights violations that have occurred," said Mungguar Pahabol, Friday (19/6/2026).

Meanwhile, KNPB of Numbay Region, Asya Sector states a firm rejection against the plan to construct a new security post in Yahukimo. The construction plan for the Indonesian military post was previously conveyed by a member of the Yahukimo Regency Regional House of Representatives (DPRK), Son Pahabol.

The security post expansion policy is assessed to have the potential to increase the escalation of psychological trauma and fear among the local civilian population.

KNPB urges the authorities to immediately conduct an independent, transparent, and accountable investigation to fully resolve this alleged legal violation. The authorities are also requested to review the security post construction plan by considering public aspirations. (One Papua)
