Two TNI Personnel Reportedly Killed in Firefight in Maybrat

MAYBRAT - The West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) reportedly ambushed an Indonesian military truck convoy in Maybrat Regency, Southwest Papua. The firefight that broke out during the incident caused two Indonesian military personnel to be killed.

The Spokesperson of the National Command of the West Papua National Liberation Army of the Free Papua Organization (KOMNAS TPNPB OPM), Sebby Sambom stated that the Central Headquarters of KOMNAS TPNPB had received an official report regarding the incident from the Commander of the Regional Defense Command (Kowip) I Rutis, Barnabas Muk.

"On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at around 12:00, we successfully carried out an attack on more than 100 Indonesian military troops in military trucks in the middle of the road about 4 kilometers from Framniawai Village towards the Far East Aifat District," said Sebby, Thursday (4/6/2026).

According to the report, the sudden attack killed two Indonesian military personnel and triggered a fierce shootout that lasted until 18:00 in the evening.

The firefight, which lasted for six hours, was immediately followed by an Indonesian military operation toward the evening from the direction of Framniawai Village toward the Far East Aifat District.

This firefight involved the Operations Commander of the TPNPB Regional Defense Command (Kodap) IV Sorong Raya Major Manfred Fatem, the Commander of the Aikiyu独 Batalyon Matias Aisyasor, the Commander of Kowip II, and combined troops from nine TPNPB battalions who had been on standby in the field.

Barnabas Muk stated that the Indonesian military has now occupied civilian settlements and established military posts without permission in villages across Maybrat Regency, which triggered fear and trauma among the local community due to the ongoing violence.

Meanwhile, the TPNPB conveyed points of emphasis addressed to President Prabowo Subianto, TNI (Indonesian National Armed Forces) Commander Agus Subyanto, and Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin regarding the deployment of troops to the Maybrat region, which directly borders Tambrauw Regency and Teluk Bintuni. TPNPB Kodap IV Sorong Raya declared they are ready to face the Indonesian military troops 24 hours full in the conflict area.

The TPNPB also reminded security forces and the local government of the figure of the late Immanuel Aimau who had fallen. The TPNPB emphasized that his spirit will always live with them and believes that new figures will be born to continue the struggle with the principle of one falling, a thousand rising.

The regional command stated they will continue the armed conflict until the Indonesian government returns the sovereignty rights of the Papuan nation, which has been independent since December 1, 1961.

The TPNPB also called on all Papuan people that this struggle is supported by the spirits of the ancestors, nature, and God, and will not stop until Indonesia recognizes the independence of Papua.

The Central Headquarters Management of KOMNAS TPNPB also urged all troops in the 36 Kodaps and all Papuan people to protect indigenous community rights and Papuan natural resources from the threats of capitalism, militarism, and Indonesian colonialism. This step is considered important so that indigenous Papuans do not become poor and suffer on their own ancestral land due to exploitation by foreign and domestic parties.

A stern warning was also delivered to indigenous Papuans who currently occupy structural positions in the Indonesian government, starting from the level of Regent, DPR (People's Representative Council), Papuan People's Assembly (MRP), Civil Servants (ASN), TNI, to Polri (National Police of the Republic of Indonesia). These positions are likened to a large prison that will ultimately bring them to detention by Indonesian law, not because of corruption cases, but because of their political intelligence.

The TPNPB gave the example of the case of the late former Governor of Papua, Lukas Enembe, who was said to be arrested and died due to state actions, not because of a pure corruption case, but because of his intelligence. Past statements from another former Governor of Papua, Barnabas Suebu, who once expressed regret for joining the NKRI (Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia), are considered authentic proof that Indonesian law does not side with the interests of Papuan people.

The Indonesian state is said to still continue to carry out acts of violence, arrests, and exploitation of natural resources without respecting the customary rights of the Papuan community. Therefore, the TPNPB calls on all officials, ASN, and TNI-Polri members of Papuan blood to immediately unite, leave their positions as an extension of Jakarta's hand, and fight together to reclaim the independence of Papua.
