PAPUA – The Central Headquarters Management of KOMNAS TPNPB officially strongly denies the statement of the Head of Information for TNI Koops Habema, Lieutenant Colonel Inf Wirya Arthadiguna, regarding the bloody incident in Tembagapura that occurred on May 7-8, 2026.
TPNPB emphasizes that the addressed accusation is an effort to spread false information in order to cover up field facts regarding the death of Naliance Wamang and the shooting of a number of underage children and mothers on the outskirts of Kali Kabur, Tembagapura District, Mimika Regency.
Based on PIS TPNPB reports from Camp David, Indonesian military personnel joined in the Habema Task Force had planned operations in the area before the fall of casualties from among civilians.
Reports received by TPNPB mention that the military operation began after a baiting shot was carried out by the police from Camp David, which was then returned by the TNI at Camp Wini Kalikuluk.
TPNPB states that this scenario was intentionally created to scapegoat TPNPB as the shooting actor for corporate interests in the region.
TPNPB Spokesperson, Sebby Sambom, emphasized TPNPB's position when the incident took place."The Central Headquarters Management of KOMNAS TPNPB reports to all parties that when the Indonesian military operation occurred on May 7-8, 2026, on the outskirts of Kali Kabur, TPNPB was not involved in the shooting action because TPNPB troops were at the Headquarters located outside of that area," said Sebby in his official statement.
He added that the accusations thrown by Lieutenant Colonel Inf Wirya Arthadiguna and Lieutenant General TNI Lucky Avianto are clear evidence that the Habema Task Force is trying to evade responsibility for the gross human rights violations that have been committed.
Information from witnesses, victims, and victims' families consistently reveals that the death of Naliance Wamang and other residents was the result of the TNI's actions.
Therefore, TPNPB urges the Indonesian military leadership to no longer practice "throwing a stone and hiding the hand" or lying to the public through misleading narratives.
TPNPB also highlights threats from the TNI against personnel at Camp David to stop reporting that corners TPNPB regarding the tragedy in Tembagapura.
Responding to the expanding humanitarian crisis, TPNPB openly requests national and international human rights institutions to immediately conduct an independent and transparent investigation.
This step is considered urgent because Pangkogabwilhan III Lieutenant General TNI Lucky Avianto is accused of being the mastermind behind the attack who let the perpetrators of the murder continue to operate without legal entanglement.
In addition to urging a legal investigation, TPNPB also calls on foreign journalists and the International Red Cross to immediately enter the conflict area to cover and handle refugees.
Currently, it is estimated that there are 107,039 civilians displaced in various regions in the Land of Papua, including Tembagapura, Puncak Ilaga, and Puncak Jaya, who need emergency humanitarian assistance due to the increasing intensity of Indonesian military operations. ***
