NABIRE – A gripping event was reported to have occurred in the heart of Nabire City on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. Based on initial information gathered by Human Rights Defender (HRD), a resident became a victim of alleged acts of violence and abduction carried out by Indonesian military personnel in the Mandala Road area, Kalibobo Village.
The incident, which took place around 18:20 WIT, shocked local residents who were active at the end of the day.
According to the chronological report from eyewitnesses on the ground, personnel reportedly fired shots three times towards the victim before finally pointing a firearm at close range. After the victim was helpless, the personnel immediately forced the victim into a car unit.
This action was not carried out alone, but involved a convoy of several other cars providing tight escort as the vehicle carrying the victim sped towards the center of Nabire City.
Tension escalated further when a number of civilians at the scene tried to approach to provide help to the victim. However, the rescue effort was met with repressive action where personnel from inside the car again fired shots to disperse the crowd. This resulted in residents running to save themselves and created a chaotic situation in Kalibobo Village.
Until now, there have been no definite reports regarding additional fatalities resulting from the shots directed at the crowd of residents.
A representative of Human Rights Defender stated that evidence of violence was clearly left at the scene of the crime as a silent trace of the event.
"We have secured information regarding the presence of a number of 9mm PIN caliber bullet casings, the victim's footwear, as well as a significant amount of blood splatter at the location of the abduction," said the HRD representative.
He also emphasized that until this second, the identity and whereabouts of the victim remain a mystery that triggers deep concern for the family and human rights activists.
This initial report has become a serious spotlight for law enforcement and the protection of civilians in the Papua region. Urges to thoroughly investigate the involvement of military personnel and immediately find the victim's whereabouts are beginning to strengthen.
The community is now waiting for an official clarification from the relevant security authorities regarding the reasons behind the extralegal action and to ensure the safety of the civilian who was forcibly taken in the bloody incident on Mandala Road. ***
