INTAN JAYA - The West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) stated it is responsible for the attack and the burning of the military rayon command post (Koramil) in Hitadipa District, Intan Jaya Regency, Papua. This attack incident occurred on Sunday, August 16, 2026 night, which triggered a firefight between members of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and TPNPB.

​The Central Headquarters Management of the National Command (KOMNAS) TPNPB received a direct report from TPNPB forces in the center of Sugapa City regarding the event. Major Aibon Kogoya led his forces directly in the attack operation which caused a number of Indonesian military personnel to suffer gunshot wounds.

​Major Aibon Kogoya, Monday (8/17/2026) emphasized that this attack was carried out to fight for the independence of the Papuan nation since December 1, 1961. Every form of celebration of the independence day of another nation above the Land of Papua is considered illegal by TPNPB.

​TPNPB even issued a strict warning to all civilians, State Civil Apparatus (ASN), and members of the Regional People's Representative Council (DPR) in Intan Jaya so as not to be involved in the celebration of the independence day of the Republic of Indonesia. TPNPB threatened to take strict action against anyone who is considered as an Indonesian military spy.

​Meanwhile, TPNPB continues to monitor the security situation in the Intan Jaya region after the burning incident. TPNPB also ensures its commitment to continue the struggle for the sovereignty of the Papuan nation. (One Papua)
