YAHUKIMO – The West Papua National Liberation Army-Free Papua Organization (TPNPB-OPM) announced national mourning over the death of the Operations Commander of the HSSBI Battalion, Major Yosan Suhun, in Yahukimo Regency. The Management of the Central Headquarters of the National Command (KOMNAS) TPNPB stated that this official announcement was issued as a form of respect for the passing of one of their members.
This information stems from the report of the Commander of the HSSBI Battalion, Major Enos M Yoal, along with Operations Commander Wene Kobak. The information was fully supported by the leadership of the Defense Regional Command (Kodap) XVI Yahukimo which oversees 2 Kowip, 7 Battalions, and 1 Women's Corps under the leadership of Brigadier General Elkius Kobak and Major Kopitua Heluka.
Yosan Suhun was reported dead after being arrested by the Indonesian military from the Marine unit in front of Yapisili Junior High School, Dekai Town. The arrest occurred without resistance, which was then followed by alleged abuse resulting in the victim's death.
The victim's body was briefly taken to the Dekai Hospital around 21:00 before finally being handed over to the family. The funeral procession and final respects were conducted after the handover of the body, which was witnessed directly by the tribal chief in Yahukimo.
"Major Yosan Suhun was a TPNPB soldier from the HSSBI Battalion who died at the hands of the Indonesian military after being arrested, he is a hero who must be appreciated and respected by all parties because he willingly sacrificed for the nation and homeland," said Sebby Sambom, Saturday (20/6/2026).
Sebby Sambom added that the deceased was the third child of the couple Yoat Suhun and Eremina Yoal. His educational history was recorded starting from the Elementary School level until completing his school years at the Junior High School level in Yahukimo.
After completing his Junior High School education, he decided to join TPNPB and was involved in various actions in the field. This track record formed the basis for his appointment as the Operations Commander of the HSSBI Battalion by the TPNPB forces.
Meanwhile, the Commander of the HSSBI Battalion Major Enos M Yoal expressed deepest appreciation and gratitude to the family of the deceased. The appreciation was given for the decision of the parents who relinquished their child to join TPNPB Kodap XVI Yahukimo.
The involvement of the deceased in confrontations with the Indonesian military was described as part of the efforts to reclaim Papua's independence, which refers to the events of December 1, 1961. The Management of the Central Headquarters of KOMNAS TPNPB even issued a specific appeal to the younger generation in the region.
TPNPB requested Papuan youth to follow the footsteps of the deceased in fighting for what they refer to as liberation from colonization. TPNPB also emphasized a profound sense of loss over the death of the field officer. (One Papua)
