Indigenous Community of Asologaima Rejects National Strategic Projects and Urges Cessation of Military Operations

PAPUA - The Indigenous Community of Asologaima District, Jayawijaya Regency, Highland Papua Province, states a firm stance rejecting all policies of National Strategic Projects (PSN).

This rejection is conveyed by a coalition of youth, church leaders, and all movement elements of the Papua Independent Indigenous Community (MAI-P) because they assess the program becomes an instrument of plundering the space of life of the people.

According to MAI-P, the PSN policy lately increasingly shows regulation that ignores the ownership rights of indigenous land.

Meanwhile, behind the diction of welfare, economic growth, and security, the reality on the ground is precisely colored by forced evictions, intimidation, murder, and destruction of the environmental ecosystem.

The indigenous community also urges that the government immediately cease organic and non-organic military operations in Asologaima District for the sake of the safety of civilians. The cessation of the movement of the Indonesian military becomes the main demand for the sake of creating a conducive situation in the highland region. The operation policy is assessed to have triggered a deep sense of fear for the indigenous people who inhabit the indigenous territory.

The Government of Indonesia is asked to immediately recognize the rights of indigenous communities fully in accordance with the applicable international law. The recognition of these indigenous rights is very fundamental because it concerns sovereignty over land, forests, and water which become the source of life of the community. As long as those rights have not been recognized officially, agrarian conflicts and plundering of indigenous territories are called will continue to occur.

Acts of intimidation and terror against civilians in Papua must also be immediately ceased. Psychological as well as physical pressure experienced by citizens makes daily activities such as farming and worshipping become highly disrupted. A sense of security constitutes a fundamental right for every human being who lives on the land of their ancestors themselves.

The Provincial Government of Highland Papua and the Regency Government of Jayawijaya are asked to cease involvement in succeeding national strategic programs. The regional government should stand together with the people to protect the territory of management of humanity, instead of precisely facilitating the interests of large corporations. Local policy should side fully with the protection of Papua humans and the sustainability of their environmental life.

The Regional Police of Metropolitan Jakarta Raya (Polda Metro Jaya) is also urged to cease the criminalization against Mrs. Yusinta Maiwend. Legal efforts against the victim of the plundering of indigenous land are called as a form of silencing the space of democracy and human rights defenders. The handling of this land dispute case is assessed unfair and detrimental to the position of the indigenous community which is weak in the eyes of the law.

"Cease organic and non-organic military operations in Asologaima District because it threatens the safety of innocent civilians," says a representative of MAI-P, Sunday (31/5/2026).

This statement is supported fully by MAI-P Agamua City Committee, MAI-P Timika City Committee, MAI-P Merauke City Committee, and MAI-P Sorong Raya Committee.

In a separate place, the situation on the ground is reported still tense along with the rejection that continues to widespread from various local communities in the highland region. Various elements of civil movement continue to conduct consolidation to ensure indigenous land and Papua humans can be saved from ecological destruction. Solidarity from various indigenous territories in Papua continues to flow to strengthen the bargaining position of the Asologaima community.

The West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) also gives serious attention toward the development of the situation of rejection of commercial development in the Jayawijaya region. TPNPB affirms its support toward the rights of indigenous communities in defending the heritage land of ancestors from external exploitation. TPNPB even is ready to escort the pure aspirations voiced by the people of Papua for the sake of social justice. (One Papua)
