Mimika Students in Jayapura Urge Independent Investigation into the Shooting of Nalince Wamang and Demand Closure of PT Freeport Indonesia

JAYAPURA — The Mimika Student Association of Jayapura Study City states an open stance regarding the civilian shooting event that occurred on May 7 to 8, 2026 in Tembagapura District.

The armed incident has claimed the life of a female student named Nalince Wamang as well as resulting in a number of other civilians suffering gunshot wounds.

Until now, the clarity of the legal process is assessed to have not provided a real sense of justice for the family of the victim and the Papua community in general.

In its official statement, the students emphasize that the right to live is the most basic constitutional right that cannot be reduced under any circumstances.

Based on the 1945 Constitution Article 28A, Article 28G paragraph (1), as well as Article 28I paragraph (1) and (4), the state bears an absolute legal obligation to protect, enforce, and fulfill the human rights of every citizen. When innocent civilians instead become victims, then it becomes a strong indication of a violation of the right to a sense of safety as well as a form of state negligence in carrying out its constitutional obligations.

Responding to the situation that continues to drag on without legal clarity, the Mimika Student Association of Jayapura Study City strongly condemns all forms of armed violence against civilians in Tembagapura District that has claimed lives.

The tragic event is assessed as a serious human rights violation that injures the right to live of the indigenous community. Therefore, the ranks of students urge that the President of the Republic of Indonesia, the Regional Government of Mimika Regency, along with the Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) of Mimika Regency do not stay silent and immediately investigate thoroughly the alleged violations objectively.

"The protection, advancement, enforcement, and fulfillment of human rights are the responsibility of the state, especially the government," states the representative of BPH Mimika Student Association.

The action leaders, Field Coordinator Nigirupkuli Uamang together with Deputy General Field Coordinator Geofani Pogolamun, jointly voice the urge so that the Regional Government and DPRD of Mimika Regency immediately form an independent investigation team to uncover field facts transparently without anything being covered up.

In addition to demanding a thorough investigation against the perpetrators of the shooting, the Student Association also issues a demand regarding the existence of the multinational corporation in their customary territory.

The students urge the government to immediately close down totally the operations of PT Freeport Indonesia, which they accuse as the main actor and the root behind the various series of gross human rights violations that continue to happen in Papua.

At the end of the release, the Student Association invites all elements of civil society, journalists, as well as humanitarian activists throughout the land of Papua to together tightly escort the legal process for the sake of the enforcement of ultimate justice and full respect toward human rights on the land of Papua. ***
