KNPB Calls for Immediate Peace Regarding the Tribal War of Lani and Dani Tribes in Wamena

WAMENA — The West Papua National Committee (KNPB) Se-Lapago issued a call to stop the horizontal conflict involving the Lani Tribe and the Dani Tribe in Wamena, Jayawijaya Regency, Mountain Papua Province.

After five days of being in a tense situation that culminated in the breakout of a tribal war, KNPB urged both sides to immediately lay down weapons and take the path of dialogue.

The Chairman of KNPB Balim, Mardi Heluka, who acts as the representative of KNPB Se-Lapago, invited the entire big family of the Dani Tribe and the Lani Tribe who are currently clashing to immediately realize peace.

Settlement steps culturally/customarily are considered to be the best way to prevent the fall of more human lives.

"We invite the families of both tribes to immediately make peace culturally, so that no more lives are sacrificed in this conflict," said Mardi Heluka.

In addition to the clashing communities, KNPB also requested a concrete commitment from the ranks of the Government of Highland Papua Province, starting from the governor, the village chiefs, to all intellectual elements throughout Highland Papua to unite and move quickly in controlling the situation on the ground.

As a form of moral responsibility, KNPB stated its readiness to act as a mediator in this reconciliation process.

The presence of KNPB is hoped to be an effective bridge to stop the clash permanently, as well as restore security stability in the Lapago region.

KNPB also called on all elements of society to actively collaborate in creating a safe and conducive atmosphere, by carrying the shared spirit to close old wounds and open a new path towards ultimate peace in the land of Highland Papua. ***
