Student in Yahukimo Critically Shot, TPNPB Urges Military Operation Status in Papua Clarified

DEKAI - A student of Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri (SMAN) 1 Dekai, Yahukimo, named Yustinus Yalak (18) is reported to have suffered severe gunshot wounds when Indonesian military apparatus deployed an operation in the center of Dekai City, Monday (15/6/2026). The victim was shot in the thigh while passing through the Kali Biru area around 17.30 WIT during the journey home toward his residence.

Residents who heard the sound of gunshots immediately went to the location of the incident and found the victim in a helpless condition. Yustinus was then evacuated by the local community to the hospital to receive emergency medical treatment.

The Central Headquarters Management of the Komando Nasional Tentara Pembebasan Nasional Papua Barat (KOMNAS TPNPB) highlighted the incident strongly.

Spokesperson of TPNPB, Sebby Sambom, called the action a clear violation of international humanitarian law and human rights in a region of armed conflict, Monday (15/6/2026).

TPNPB urged President Prabowo Subianto, Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, Commander of the Tentara Nasional Indonesia (TNI) Agus Subyanto, and Pangkogabwilhan III Lieutenant General TNI Lucky Avianto to immediately stop actions of violence against civilians.

TPNPB demanded the government of Indonesia provide an official statement regarding the status of military operations in the Land of Papua to guarantee the protection of civilians.

Meanwhile, tension in the Kali Biru area is reported to have increased since Sunday (14/6/2026) night. TPNPB mentioned the Indonesian military carried out a silent operation without using tactical vehicles from the direction of the Komando Distrik Militer (Kodim). The action is suspected to have resulted in the shooting of three civilians.

TPNPB also reported the arrest of two elderly citizens by the military apparatus for interrogation needs, while the whereabouts of one other civilian until now remain unknown. Local residents secured 53 bullet casings around the location as evidence.

TPNPB even brought up the humanitarian crisis that continues to worsen. Referring to data from the Human Rights Monitor, there are more than 122,931 internal refugees in Papua. TPNPB pushed the International Red Cross and the United Nations (UN) to give serious attention and provide a safe space for the refugees.

Sebby closed by stating the armed conflict for 64 years between TPNPB and the Indonesian military will not end without the existence of substantive political negotiations. TPNPB stated the government of Indonesia must be willing to open a space for dialog for the resolution of the conflict that has taken place since the 1960s. (One Papua)
