Two Housewives Become Victims of Air Strikes in Intan Jaya, TPNPB Urges UN Investigation

PAPUA - Two housewives became victims of bomb attacks launched by the Indonesian military in Danggoa Village, Agisiga District, Intan Jaya Regency, Central Papua Province. The Central Headquarters Management of the National Command of the West Papua National Liberation Army (KOMNAS TPNPB) received an official report from the TPNPB Eighth Defense Regional Command (Kodap) Intan Jaya stating the attacks occurred when the Indonesian military conducted air operations using helicopters and drones.

The bomb attacks that wounded Mrs. Agolu Pogau and Mrs. Otovina Hogajau on June 18, 2026 afternoon took place amid an increase in the intensity of military operations. TPNPB stated that air operations using Indonesian military drones and helicopters in the Intan Jaya region have continued to increase since last year until now.

The Spokesperson of TPNPB, Sebby Sambom stated that the statement of the Commander of military district command 1705/Nabire, Lieutenant Colonel of Infantry Wirya Arthadiguna in several national media was incorrect. Wirya previously mentioned the Indonesian military did not conduct bomb attacks in Intan Jaya. TPNPB assessed the Indonesian military is attempting to cover up war crimes that have sacrificed civilians in the residential area.

"These large-scale bomb attacks and air operations are not directed at TPNPB forces, but rather target mothers, children, churches, and civilian settlements," said Sebby Sambom, Sunday (21/6/2026).

According to TPNPB records, the use of heavy weapons by the Indonesian military in Intan Jaya from June 15 to 21, 2026 involved at least 3 units of military helicopters and dozens of drones equipped with bombs. This wave of attacks extends a series of air operations following the occurrence of a bomb attack against a Catholic Church in Intan Jaya on May 17, 2026.

The expanding armed conflict has a serious impact on the space of movement and economic activities of the local indigenous community. Civilians in villages located in Agisiga District, Hitadipa District, and Sugapa District now cannot farm or hunt due to trauma regarding the presence of drones and helicopters that continue to patrol.

Deep fear forced a large portion of the residents to leave their homelands for the safety of their lives. A mass exodus occurred to several safe areas, where residents fled to Nabire, Timika, and Jayapura to seek protection.

Meanwhile, the latest report from the international humanitarian organization Human Rights Monitor as of June 2026 shows the number of displacements due to the Papua conflict has reached 122,931 people. Thousands of these civilians are now scattered across various emergency areas and remote regions in the land of Papua.

The condition of these internally displaced persons is increasingly deplorable as they experience an acute crisis in meeting urgent basic needs. KOMNAS TPNPB highlighted that the Indonesian Red Cross and the Indonesian government seem to let the displaced persons survive in forests without the presence of adequate humanitarian assistance.

The absence of serious attention and medical handling from related agencies causes the rates of hunger and death in displacement camps to continue to rise. This acute humanitarian crisis is assessed to require direct intervention from international agencies so it does not cause more casualties from civilian circles.

The Central Headquarters Management of KOMNAS TPNPB requested the United Nations (UN) to immediately send an independent investigation team to investigate alleged war crimes in Papua. The UN is also urged to provide a mandate to the UN Security Council and the UN Human Rights Council to lead the distribution of humanitarian assistance for hundreds of thousands of displaced persons.

TPNPB also emphasized that President Prabowo Subianto, Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, and Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces General Agus Subyanto must bear full responsibility for this operation. The Indonesian military is said to have committed serious violations by making civilian areas into an aerial battlefield. (One Papua)
