TPNPB Says Indonesian Military Planted Mines in Intan Jaya Church, Urges President to Take Responsibility

INTAN JAYA - The Management of the Central Headquarters of the National Command of the West Papua National Liberation Army (KOMNAS TPNPB) reported an increase in the intensity of Indonesian military operations in Intan Jaya Regency targeting religious facilities and civilian settlements from January to June 2026. Based on reports from the TPNPB Scenario Information Center in Sugapa City, an airstrike using a drone on 17 May 2026 left four civilians seriously injured.

One of the victims, a Donggoa Village official named Luter Nabelau, died in Timika from severe injuries following an explosion in the yard of the Saint Paul Nabuni Catholic Church, Mbamogo Village.

Apart from the airstrike, the Indonesian military was said to have launched a ground operation and planted mines under the entrance of the Sion Church, Jaindapa Village, Hitadipa District.

"The bomb was found on Tuesday (2/6/2026) with a safety pin tied to a rope designed to explode if touched by a pastor or congregation," said the Spokesperson for TPNPB OPM, Sebby Sambom.

TPNPB urged the people of Intan Jaya to be vigilant when carrying out activities in public facilities given that a similar discovery was also reported to be in Ndugisiga Village.

Seeing this escalation, KOMNAS TPNPB urged domestic and international church leaders to condemn the attack on the house of worship, which is categorized as a war crime. TPNPB demanded President Prabowo Subianto take responsibility for the series of military operations in Intan Jaya that have triggered casualties since 2019.

Meanwhile, TPNPB also called on the United Nations (UN) and the International Red Cross to immediately handle the humanitarian crisis resulting from the armed conflict that has been going on for 63 years. International human rights organizations were urged to evacuate and distribute logistical aid for 107,039 civilian refugees in the interior of Papua who are currently facing food and medicine shortages.
