Humanitarian Aspirations Amidst Regional Leaders’ Meeting: KNPB Timika Holds Action in Front of Hotel Horison Diana

TIMIKA – The West Papua National Committee (KNPB) of the Timika Region held a humanitarian action in front of Hotel Horison Diana Timika, Monday, May 11, 2026. This action coincided with the momentum of the meeting of Regents from across Papua and six Governors from all provinces in Papua who were gathered to discuss the evaluation of the implementation of Special Autonomy (Otsus) as well as the direction of development in the Land of the Bird of Paradise.

In their oration, KNPB Timika emphasized that the development agenda and formal discussions regarding Special Autonomy must not run unevenly by ignoring the humanitarian issues that continue to haunt the community.

KNPB highlighted the series of violence cases and shooting incidents against civilians occurring in the Timika region and various other points in Papua as an urgent issue that must be immediately addressed by policy makers.

The protesters openly asserted that their presence at the meeting location was not intended to obstruct or disperse the regional leaders' meeting agenda. On the contrary, this movement was present as a reminder so that the leaders in the Land of Papua have the courage and seriousness to include the issue of civilian safety and respect for human rights into the discussion table.

The situation on the ground experienced tension when a number of plainclothes police officers from the Mimika Resort Police arrived at the action site.

Based on KNPB reports, the apparatus requested the mass to immediately disperse to maintain the sterility of the meeting area. Nevertheless, the message brought remained consistent, namely asking the governors and regents not only to be trapped in administrative development figures, but also to be sensitive to the safety of the citizens' lives.

This action concluded with great hope that the results of the meeting at Hotel Horison Diana would produce real recommendations in stopping the violence in Papua.

KNPB Timika emphasized that Special Autonomy will only be considered successful if it is able to provide a sense of security and guarantees of human rights for all Papuan people without exception. ***
