St. Paulus Church Aerial Bombed, Four Sugapa Civilians Injured

INTAN JAYA — The humanitarian situation in Intan Jaya Regency is gripping again. The Pastoral Team of Bilogai Parish reported an aerial bombing action allegedly carried out by TNI apparatus in the yard of St. Paul Nabuni Mbamogo Catholic Church, Bilogai Parish, Sugapa District, on Sunday (17/5).

The large explosion resulted in four civilians being seriously injured due to being hit by bomb shrapnel.

Based on data gathered from the field, the four injured victims were identified as Pit Pogau, Robert Nabelau, Pius Pogau, and Piter Nabelau. All four suffered injuries due to shrapnel from the explosion that hit the area around the church complex.

Responding to the tragedy, the Pastoral Team of Bilogai Parish moved quickly to carry out a rescue. The evacuation action was led directly by the Pastor Dean of the Moni-Puncak Deanery, Pastor Yanuarius Yance Yogi, Pr. The victims were immediately rushed to the Bilogai General Hospital (RSU) in Sugapa District to get emergency medical treatment.

The Human Rights Defender (HRD) institution confirmed that the evacuation process was divided into several stages due to constraints with the situation in the field.

Until Sunday night, only two victims had been fully evacuated to the health facility, while the other victims are scheduled to be evacuated on Monday, May 18, 2026.

"Two injured victims have been successfully evacuated by us to the hospital today, while the other victims can only be evacuated by us tomorrow morning because of considering the security conditions and the terrain in the field," said a representative of the Human Rights Defender.

This event adds to the long list of military violence that directly impacts civilians and religious facilities in the Land of Papua, especially in the Intan Jaya conflict area.

Until this news is released, the indigenous community in Sugapa District is reported to still be enveloped in fear due to the intensity of the aerial attacks. ***
