KNPB Calls for Conflict Management and Concrete Action by Catholic Student Young Intellectuals in Papua

PAPUA — The National Committee for West Papua (KNPB) calls for the involvement of young intellectuals to resolve the socio-political crisis. This step is described as crucial to face the design of conflict that occurs in the land of Papua.

The Chairperson 1 of the Central KNPB, Warpo Sampari Wetipo, delivered conflict management material within the Leadership Cadre Training (LKK) of the Catholic Students Association of the Republic of Indonesia (PMKRI) Santo Efrem Jayapura branch.

"The direction of PMKRI is already clear, the organization exists to side with the oppressed or the weak," said Warpo Sampari Wetipo, Friday (22/5/2026).

The slogan Pro Ecclesia Et Patria which has the meaning of siding with the Church and the Homeland must not become an empty symbol alone.

Warpo said, educated cadres of PMKRI are required to plunge directly as well as be involved in resolving various dynamics of social and political problems in the surrounding environment.

According to him, the condition of the Catholic community and Papuan citizens in general now is in an uncomfortable situation due to the escalation of tension in the Papua region.

For him, all elements of students and the Papuan nation's children are mandated to see the real situation on the ground for the sake of voicing the truth consistently.

He also said, the dynamics of real conflict management, now have been felt directly in the campus space, Church space, government, to community life.

According to him, the public needs to know that conflict can be designed by anyone as well as anywhere within the political situation.

"Student cadres before making important decisions must identify cases, analyze, as well as build intensive communication together with all parties," said Warpo.

He added, that comprehensive collaboration is highly needed to resolve continuous conflict in the framework of seeking a long-term peaceful solution in the land of Papua.

Meanwhile, the security situation in the interior region of Papua is reported to still be dynamic with the presence of the Indonesian military that continues to stand guard.

To resolve the Papua issue, said Warpo, a deep dialogical approach is required so as not to cause new casualties in the community. (One Papua)
